A Minion Pedestal

1

Remember a while back we had our family minionized?  Well now that the desk is complete it was time they found a permanent home where they could be on display.  I also wanted them to have a little platform to sit on, so when I saw a small unfinished wood plaque in the dollar bin at Michaels that was just the right size, I snagged it.  I did the same finish on the pedestal as I did on the dog bowl stands, starting with a coat of stain, then some grey paint and a light sanding for a bit of distressing.  It’s the perfect mix of rustic and modern.

2

They live on my side of the desk, between my “inbox” and my supply caddy.  From across the room you don’t notice them much, but up close they just make you smile. And now that they are out in the main living area rather than our bedroom, guests can see them and enjoy them as well, which makes me even happier. 🙂

Eklutna in the Spring

The hubs and I took advantage of the beautiful weather over the weekend and headed out to Eklutna Lake for a ride in our side-by-side.  This was the first time either of us had been out on this trail so we weren’t sure what to expect, but the view from parking lot gave us a pretty good indication of what we were in store for.

As soon as we had the side-by-side off the trailer the kiddos loaded up to ride and somebody apparently thought she was supposed to ride shotgun.Ride2

That lasted all of about two seconds before I relegated her to the back with her siblings and took my seat next to the hubs so we could head down the trail.

The first part of the trail was a little narrow and riddled with puddles left over from the melting spring snow.RideTrail

As the trail opened up we came to this cute little bridge, which took us over a creek that feeds the lake.RideTrailBridge

I had fun playing with the mirrors the hubs recently installed when the trees blocked the view of the lake.RideSelfieIncluding giggling at these two goofballs watching the scenery go by with total excitement.

Eventually the trees gave way and we were blessed with this view. RideLakeside

We continued down the trail, occasionally encountering other riders as we traveled along the shore for several miles.  At the end of the lake we found this charred forest with beautiful views of the mountains.  We continued on for a bit before we decided to head back after a quick stop to eat a snack and give the dogs water.   RideTrailFire

As we loaded the dogs back up to get going Bacardi seemed pretty tired, so I held her on my lap, where she tried desperately to sleep despite the bumpy trail.  She stayed there all the way to the parking lot, where she was suddenly wide awake again.
RideFinalIt was a good first trip out for the season.  Hopefully there will be many more to share in the coming months!

Best Laid Plans…

Hi everyone. The hubs was unexpectedly admitted to the hospital last week for an infection in his leg, which kinda threw all of my plans out the window. It was a long week, but he’s doing better and now that he’s finally home we’re getting back to the normal routine.

I’ll be back to working on all the projects I was hoping to share with you last week very soon, including the finishing touches on our wall-to-wall desk in the studio/office, a tea station in our kitchen and a gallery wall around the family room TV. So check back next week for those projects. Until then I wish you all health and happiness!

Shifting Schedules

The hubs recently started a new job with a schedule that coordinates with mine, except it starts 2 hours earlier because he has a 4 day work week. We thought he might be able to find a share-ride option for the mornings and then ride home with me in the afternoons, but there haven’t been any available spots on the vans that go to his shop. So I suggested an alternate arrangement – I’d come in earlier and drop him off before heading to my office for some quite personal time.

Although this requires getting up an hour and a half earlier than I normally would, which is a huge feat for a night owl like me, it’s working out pretty well. Having almost 2 hours of uninterrupted time to write (hence the increase in blog posts) or complete tasks each morning has been far more productive than working on the same things in the evenings at home. Plus, because I’ve already accomplished several tasks before starting my workday, I’m much less stressed throughout the day and can now relax when I get home in the evenings. I also feel more awake when the work day starts, which makes me more productive at work as well.

At first, it was difficult to resist going into ‘work’ mode when I arrive at the office. Because of that, I’ve set a strict rule of not logging into my work email or opening any work files until it’s time to start working. That way I’m not tempted to “just answer that quick email” which leads to another and another and so on.

Another bonus of my earlier arrival is avoiding the morning crowd on the highway. Before the new schedule I would typically arrive at work 30 minutes early because the traffic wasn’t as congested if I left home just a little earlier than I HAD to and it allowed flexibility if there was congestion. And since the hubs drives most mornings it gives me even more time to catch up on email or check things online with my phone. But mostly I enjoy having an extra two hours of time to chat with the hubs, even if it’s just talking through the day-to-day stuff.

Granted, I admit I’m still trying to get my internal clock adjusted and it is a struggle maintaining an appropriate bedtime, but overall I’m really happy I made the change. In fact, when circumstances don’t allow us to drive together I still maintain the schedule and work on things at home instead. You might recall I made a similar schedule change about this time last year and it worked for a while, but without the added motivation of carpooling and saving money it didn’t last more than a month or two. This time I think I’ll stick with it because it works well for both of us, I’m more relaxed overall and my thrifty side is all about spending less on gas. And that’s worth overcoming the desire to ignore the alarm and snuggle back under the covers.

Our Luna-tic

Luna Hi lovelies. I took a little break from blogging last week to get caught up on that crazy thing called life. Things have been a little overwhelming recently and I just needed some down time to tie up those pesky loose ends that seem to multiply just when things are busiest. But now that I’m back, I thought I’d share a little about our kitty, Miss Luna. She’s had cameo appearances in several posts since we brought her into the family just over a year ago, but I haven’t posted much about her personally during that time. So here’s her moment in the spotlight. Although she wasn’t much pleased to have doggie siblings when she first came home, she’s adapted and certainly holds her own. These days she tolerates standard doggie behavior such as sniffing rears and barking so long as it doesn’t interfere with her kitty duties of monitoring the bird and squirrel population in the backyard and nap time. If you follow the DB&DT Facebook page you’ve seen this photo of her and Bacardi enjoying each other’s company – within limits. 2ofakind While she’s certainly lived up to the nickname “Princess” as most cats do, she’s also had plenty of “Luna-tic” moments such as darting through the house at full speed while the rest of us are snuggling on the couch watching TV or attacking a small remnant of a dog toy as if it were the most interesting prey you’d ever seen. Recently, she’s been climbing the ladder that is sitting in the office for an in-progress project I’ll be sharing in the near future, but she makes her way to the top via the wrong side of the ladder which makes for some hysterical stretching techniques. Occasionally I can document these odd behaviors with photos on my phone such as when she decided to help with the laundry, or when she explored every inch of the garage and the kitchen or when she inspected the kitchen faucet. Sometimes I’m lucky enough to have my real camera ready for these shenanigans like when she attempted to climb the columns on the front porch. Not sure where she thought she was going, but she was pretty determined to get there. Post Plus she’s fascinated with drawers. If you leave a drawer open in our home you’re bound to have a cat in it within minutes. She’s even tried to open drawers herself by pawing at them! But one of her all-time favorite things is plastic bags. Every time I switch out the holiday décor and have a pile of bags on the floor, there’s bound to be a cat in it. BagPile Unfortunately the bags don’t seem to love her back quite as much. She recently took a tumble off the bed when she decided to sneak into an online order shipment bag I had just emptied and we’ve found her in this situation twice now.  The look of embarrassment on her face is priceless! Bag She certainly is a curious kitty, but she’s smart too which keeps her from using up those extra lives in pursuit of adventures. I’m so happy to have her as part of our family and I look forward to many more “Luna-tic” moments in the years to come. 🙂

My Pants Crisis

In the midst of No Spend January my fur babies decided I needed a little extra drama in my life, so they pulled two of my dress pants from the hamper and ‘restyled’ them with huge holes. Yeah…. Let’s just say they’d be considered indecent exposure, especially in a corporate office!

Two may not seem like a huge deal, but because I’d been losing weight I was down to a handful of pants that still fit at the time. So my little problem became a mini-crisis. As an event planner, I am usually on the go at work and don’t often wear dresses or skirts because they just aren’t suitable for what I’m doing most days. Thus, having multiple pants options is a must and now that I no longer had enough to rotate through each week it became something I actually NEEDED, although I hadn’t planned on clothes shopping for the month.

I hit a few thrift stores and consignment shops in the hopes that I’d find the ever elusive style that fits my long legs and curves – in the right size, but that didn’t happen and I didn’t have time to keep searching.   Luckily, retailers were gearing up for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day sales so I ordered several pants in different styles and sizes from Macy’s. Although the total price tag was a bit hefty even with the sales, I figured whatever didn’t fit would be returned – keeping me on par for No Spend January. Unfortunately, NONE of them fit and I had to return the entire order!  Although that meant I still fit within No-Spend January’s rules I still needed pants.

By this point I was desperate. That’s when I decided to try The Limited. I’d never ordered from them before, but had heard about them on several fashion blogs so I figured it was worth a try. I placed an order for 11 pairs of pants in various sizes and cuts so I could see what worked for me and what didn’t. I ended up keeping two of the 11 pairs which thankfully put me back in balance for my weekly rotation.

Because I’d placed such a large order I received a sizeable amount of “virtual dollars” to use later in February. Now that I knew what style I liked and size fit me, I used those dollars along with the President’s Day sale to purchase another round of 10 pants. This time I kept all but one pair, giving me a whole new arsenal of pants for my wardrobe!

I’m still losing weight, so eventually I’ll have to get most of them taken in, but it was worth it to have the pants crisis abated. I’m still on the hunt for a few additional colors since several of the ones I kept ranged from gold to khaki, so I might pick up a few more with the coupon included in the recent shipment. And since I just purged my closet in preparation for a big consignment sale later this month, I’ll have a few dollars to reinvest!

Hopefully, I’ll find time to start sharing some of my outfits soon so you can see all these new duds in action! 🙂

Fit Club

Although I wasn’t one of the masses that resolved to lose weight in the new year I do have a few extra pounds I wouldn’t mind parting with so I decided to check out the wellness programs my employer offers.  There were two options: “Biggest Loser” which calculates weight loss just like the TV show and “Fit Club” which is intended to provide motivation to maintain or lose weight.  I knew I wouldn’t be shedding enough pounds to be competitive in the Biggest Loser group, so I chose Fit Club.

The rules are simple, you must have maintained or lost weight at 5 of the 6 monthly weigh-ins to be eligible to win the pot of everyone’s $10 join fees.  There are also monthly drawings just for showing up to the weigh-ins if you weigh the same or less than your starting weight.

My first monthly weigh in was last week and I’m happy to report that I’m down 3 pounds from my starting weight.  It may not be a lot, but I haven’t made any drastic changes to my diet or lifestyle, so it’s a good result for just making healthy choices.

One of those choices is taking the stairs now that my office is on the 5th floor.  I do sometimes ‘cheat’ when I want to catch up with a co-worker who is getting on the elevator or if I’m carrying something that would make stairs hazardous, but for the most part I’m sticking with it – even when I’m coming back from the basement.  I still get winded part way up, but it’s getting better the more I do it.  Plus getting my blood pumping every so often is nice for those days when I’m stuck at my desk and not running around managing events.

Hopefully I continue on this trend, creating a healthier me one step at a time along the way and winning the jackpot just about the time I’ve got a vacation planned to the land of heat and humidity back east this summer where a few less pounds will be welcome!

The 52 Week Savings Challenge

JarAround this time last year the hubs suggested we try the 52 Week Savings Plan he’d seen online. The idea is pretty simple, the first week you put $1 into your designated savings container and then increase that amount by a dollar each week. If you stick with it, you’ll have $1,378 at the end of the year.

We decided to both take the challenge, which would give us just over $2,700 in savings. Not a bad thing to have as a home owner. I appropriated some clear jars I had laying around, printed two of the weekly savings chart and attached one to each jar. It was pretty easy in the beginning since the amounts were so minimal, but as we headed into the last third of the year and the amounts were increasing it became a little more difficult.

Most of the dollars in my jar came from selling items we no longer needed or wanted on local online buy/sell pages as we settled into our new home.  It was a win-win, less clutter in our house and a few dollars in savings.  I will admit that both jars were raided on a few occasions when “life” happened and we needed cash for something. Thanks to my photography clients, my jar recuperated but the hub’s jar never did.  Luckily, my jar’s balance covered Christmas shopping for our family with enough left over to open a new savings account.

We’ve decided to give it a try again this year because it’s good to build a habit of saving, even if it takes a few attempts.  I’ve read several financial gurus’ opinions both for and against the idea. Some suggest doing the plan in reverse, starting week one with $52 and decreasing the amount by $1 each week to make it more rewarding. Others suggest using an automatic transfer to a savings account rather than having the cash sitting around.  Both are good ideas but for now we’ll stick with the original and keep it simple.  Both jars already have their first dollar in them for this week and mine has $2 more for next week thanks to another online sale, so we’re starting out on a good note.

Have you done the 52 Week Savings Challenge?  Tell me about it.  Did it help you create a habit of saving that continued and how did you use the balance at the end?

Welcome to No Spend January

Happy New Year! Today is a busy one at the DB&DT house. I’m taking down all the Christmas decorations (since I won’t have another chance to do so for weeks) and we’re starting a few of the projects I have planned for 2015. But it’s also the beginning of my choice to have a “No Spend January” as part of my desire to pay off debts and better balance our financial standings.

What is “No Spend January”? It’s actually pretty simple, I will only be purchasing or spending for those items that are necessary – groceries, gas, regular monthly bills. So that means no trips to the thrift store, Target or through the clothing department unless it’s for a necessary item, which isn’t likely. Luckily I got a few gift cards for Christmas – one for $40 at Target and another for $40 at Pier 1, plus I won a second $35 Target gift card in a local contest. So I have a bit of a reserve I can utilize if I just need to go browsing. The hubs and I also got a $100 gift card to Home Depot for Christmas so that provides for any supplies I might need to work on projects in the mean time. The hubs also received a $40 gift card to Lowes for Christmas, but he’s not participating in my no spend project and I’ve told him those dollars are for him to use finishing his egg table.

Since I won’t be shopping, I won’t be bringing in any new projects which will allow me to focus on those that I’ve already purchased supplies for, but not yet completed. That list includes:

  • Installing shelves above the desk in the office/studio
  • Installing a cabinet in the laundry room
  • A bench for the foot of our bed
  • Candlestick pedestals for décor
  • Crate & Barrel Knock-off hurricane candlesticks
  • Applying felt to the legs of our barstools and dining room chairs
  • Organizing my fabric stash
  • Finishing the guest room closet install
  • Labeling my laundry supplies
  • Revamping several thrift store finds
  • Making a sign with a “Together” vinyl I’ve had for years
  • Prepping the items for a gallery wall I’m planning around the family room TV
  • Creating a photo collage from a large old window I brought back on our road trip last year

It’s a pretty hefty list, but I’m excited to see all those projects accomplished and removed from my to-do list. Doing it all without spending any more money is the cherry on top! So stay tuned to see how it all turns out over the coming weeks!  And if you’d like to join me on this adventure share your journey as well!

A Look Back at 2014

It’s New Year’s Eve and that means it’s time for a recap of 2014 at the DB&DT home. It’s certainly been a year of change. This time last year I had just picked up Sangria’s ashes and we had already brought Stoli home. Then just two months later Luna joined the family followed by Bacardi two months after that. That’s an entire new family group within a year!  And we’re blessed to have all of them.

We spent the first part of the year getting the basics set up in the new house including the master closet, the bathroom closet and the pantry. The next big project was upgrading the fur babies from the small dog run they had when we first moved in to a huge fenced back yard with grass. We also ditched the slider door insert and installed a permanent doggie door in the wall. The studio/office started coming together with the addition of my craft cabinet and the first phase of the wall-to-wall desk upgrade.  And of course I decorated to make the house feel like a home with various projects throughout all of this.

We spent a big chunk of the summer adding flower beds in the front and on the side of the house plus a massive rain garden along the driveway. Then the hubs built his big manly shed this fall.  Somehow we still squeezed in some travel with our 2 week long road trip on the AlCan and extended my business trip to Juneau to include some time to explore.

I’ve got big ideas for several projects in 2015, including finishing the office, getting the spare room set up and making the laundry room more functional, plus a batch of outdoor projects for the yard over the summer.  I’ve started a Pinterest board to keep track of what we accomplish along with ideas for a few fun things as well.  And it all kicks off tomorrow, so stay tuned for updates! 🙂
