Coins on Display

Most military wives are familiar with the coin tradition of the military.  There are coins for missions, coins for units, coins for special occasions and even coins for secretaries of each branch.  And any military member who’s been around a while has LOTS of them.  After just shy of 20 years in the Coast Guard my hubby is no exception.

Although I was proud of all the accolades and moments he had collected, I wasn’t enjoying finding them all over the house or stashed away in storage.  I’d heard about coin display boards thanks to this post by one of my favorite bloggers, and decided to get one for the hubs for Valentines day.  When we moved and set up the curio cabinet at the new house I had the hubs sort through his coins and decide how many he’d like to have displayed.  I casually showed him the different stands available and asked what he’d like his to say, then acted like it was something we’d have to get “one day”.  Once I knew his preferences I secretly put in a custom order a few days later.

CoinHolder

There wasn’t any major reaction when it arrived, but I can tell he likes it.  He filled it with the coins he’d chosen to display and I made room for it in the curio cabinet, surrounded by his other keepsakes.  The rest of his collection is in storage, but at least they are no longer floating around the house.  There’s still room for a few more if he decides there’s others that should be on display or picks up something new during his retirement.

It’s the perfect addition to the other displays in our home of both the hubs and his Pop’s service.  What displays have you created in your home to honor your family’s military service?

Showing a Little Love

With Valentines Day just around the corner I thought I’d share my seasonal decorations.  I kept things pretty simple, using what I already had, including multiple items I use as props for my photography mini sessions – as always, striving for items in my life to be efficient and pull double duty.

In the entry way I dressed up the large mirror with a burlap banner and added some pink, red and gold items to the entry table.

MirrorBanner

And next to the front door is my little holiday tree decked out with both red and clear glass hearts, Valentines themed ornaments and topped with cupids.

Tree

The TV stand got a little attention with flowers and hearts in an apothecary jar, paired with votives.

TVRight   TVLeft

I also used a cute little heart cut out votive holder I found at a thrift store last year on the side table with some pretty purple and pink faux tulips in a mason jar.  Unfortunately, during Stoli’s early days with us he decided that was his primary target of destruction, so the tulips are no more.  I’ve since bought some cheap grocery store live flowers, which have lasted pretty well and still compliment the little votive.  Somehow I didn’t take a picture of that, so maybe I’ll post one on Facebook later.

The mantel was the perfect spot for a heart garland and some pillar candles.  I normally put the heart wreath on the door but I like it here better.

Mantel

The dining room got the left overs.  Some new felt filigree hearts on the lamps, and a rose petal filled basket that holds an XOXO piece I found in the dollar section at Target.  Same as the LOVE piece on the mantel.

DiningRoom

I really love how the heart looks on the lamp when it’s all lit up at night.  And it’s pretty during the day too.

Lastly I put my “Love you more” pillow on the bench near the entry, just to give it a little something. 🙂

Bench

So that’s it.  Sweet and simple, just like I said.  What did you do for Valentines Day decor?  Did you DIY something special, or work some bargain finds into a great display?  I want to hear about it!

A Little Indoor Gardening

Remember my little terrarium project?  Well it’s gone so well that a few of the plants have since outgrown their little bubbles and were in need of a bigger home.  I’ve been collecting little crocks and containers to serve as planters and trays to set them all on for a few weeks now from clearance bins and yard sales.  I decided I finally had enough and got some potting soil to get things going.  Here’s what I started with.

2

You can sense that I had a plan as I set all these out! I moved the larger plants into new pots where they can continue to grow, and transferred the slower growing plants to the now empty terrariums.

1

I ended up with enough planters to fill the laundry room window, the master bathroom window AND one of the windows in the family room.

3

At some point in the hopefully near future the terrariums will once again hang in the windows, but I’ve given the hubs marching order that his priority is getting the garage unpacked and organized first – which will also hopefully result in him finding his fishing line to do said hanging!  Once I rearranged everything there was still a bit of room in the laundry room window tray so I found another small container for future repotting, or even a new additional plant.

5

I was afraid that the dogs might bother the ones in the family room since it sits at eye level for them, but luckily they haven’t seemed very interested.  Hopefully that statement didn’t just jinx things! LOL

I love having something green and alive around the house, how about you?  What kinds of plants do you have in your home?

Dressing the Cabinet Tops

Decorating the tops of cabinets is harder than it sounds.  It takes a perfect mix of size, color, shapes, spacing and design.  I had a basic plan for the top of our kitchen cabinets as we were building, but you never really know how it will turn out until you’re in the space and trying it out.  I decided to tackle the smaller section first, and am quite pleased with how it turned out.

CabinetTops1

I like my decor to do double duty and actually function, so displaying my large holiday platter was a perfect choice – and the fact that it’s so large it won’t fit anywhere else played a key role too.  🙂  I added the custom cutting board I got for the hubs for a birthday a while back and a two-tier basket filled with faux veggies & fruit for color.  All of these things were items I had on hand, so total cost was a big fat $0!

I did have to figure out a way to elevate the items so they could be seen over the lovely crown molding.  And the perfect solution came in the form of the little dip cups we’d *cough* “acquired” *cough* from restaurants in our to-go boxes.  I was actually about to take the whole stack of them to Goodwill, but as I stood on the ladder contemplating what I could use I had a “light bulb moment” a’la’ Gru in Despicable Me.

CabinetTopsRigPlace

I’ve since added the glass chile peppers we found on our honeymoon in Sedona to the left edge of the cutting board for some additional color on that side.  I love seeing them displayed and I know they’re “safe” that high up and out of the way. 😉

Next, I had to figure out what to do with the staggered height cabinets on the longer back wall.   I already had my giant ceramic chicken my sister gave me and my pretty cake stand, which make a great combo and fit perfectly on one cabinet.  I also had my handy drink dispenser on a stand that I’d filled with faux lemons for some color while at the rental house.  That too fit perfectly on one cabinet.  I still hadn’t spent a dime and I was almost done!

Chicken

Lemons

With two cabinets to go, I was stuck.  I left the project alone for a few days weeks and moved on to other things.  One of those other projects was getting new bar stools for the kitchen island bar, which meant all of our dining chairs moved into the dining room.  I didn’t like how full the table felt with all eight chairs around the table so I put two on either side of the buffet.  Unfortunately, that meant that the pretty wine rack I’d found during a recent thrifting trip had to find a new home.

Rack1

We aren’t big drinkers – even with dogs named after alcohol – so we only had a few bottles of various things (note there is only one real wine bottle in said ‘wine’ rack!)  I had originally planned to include some sort of side table or cart as a bar in the dining room or main area of the house, but once we were in and placing furniture it seemed like it would make the space feel crowded and because we don’t tend to keep a lot on hand, there wasn’t the need for a dedicated ‘bar’.  So my under $5 rack worked out perfectly and left a little room to expand if needed.

Bargain

My now displaced rack seemed like a perfect candidate for above the cabinet decor, so I tried it first over the fridge, but it was too tall.  The hubs suggested I move the chicken over one cabinet to the spot above the stove and try the rack in the corner.  Although the corner cabinet seems to be the same height as the fridge cabinet, they are apparently not, because the rack did fit this time!  And I was quite pleased with how it looked in that spot.

WineRack

Now I’m down to just the space over the fridge.  Since this is a wider space I decided to use two items here.  First is the lovely vintage scale I bought as a newborn photo prop (even my photography props do double duty!)  It hasn’t arrived just yet, but I’m sure it will bring just the right amount of color and difference of shape to that side.  I’m a little worried about the scale of the scale (ha ha), but I think it should be ok, even if it’s a little small because I also found a large popcorn tin on a local buy/sell page that I plan to paint.  I was originally thinking I’d go with a copper color but now that I have my cache pot, I want something different.  Perhaps a milk paint ivory with a greenish lid and a stenciled design similar to this.  But before I start that project I want to decide what the design should be.  I’m considering a simple ‘Bon Appetit’ but I also like the idea of ‘Delish’ with a small flourish pattern or something using some of these words.  Or maybe create something like this but with an Alaskan spin.  What do you think would look best?  I’m also toying with the idea of changing the handles so it looks a little like the uber expensive Pottery Barn urns I always lust for although Pier 1 has a similar option for a little less.

WideShot

So far, not counting the scale – since that’s a business expense 😉 – my total is approximately $11 for the wine rack and tin.  Not bad at all, if I do say so myself.  Granted there might be some cost in painting the tin, but I’m sure it won’t be anything major.  I’m sure I’ll do a post on my re-do of the tin once I get to it, so keep an eye out for that!

Bargain Hunting

potShortly after we moved in to the new house, something told me I should visit the thrift store around the corner from my office.  I’m sure glad I did because I hit a jackpot of items for areas of the house.  I knew it was going to be one of those trips when I spotted this copper tin right off the bat when I walked in.  I’d been looking for something like this to make a cache pot (kitchen scrap pot) for a while.  It was the perfect size, had a lid and had a great look to it.  And at $4 it was perfection.  A far better price than the ones I was finding online for $60 and $70!

I also found a basket and shell for the guest bathroom, a fantastic wine rack, a large glass jar, decor pieces, pretty trays, an adorable little Princess House jar and a basket to collect eggs in when we get our chicken coop up and running this summer!  And each was a fraction of the price I would have paid new.  Here’s a picture of the whole haul from that trip.

FindsAfter that, I didn’t make it back to another thrift store for a while, but last week I hit three different ones around Anchorage within two days and left each empty handed.  Granted I was shopping for specific items, but they were things you’d expect to find in thrift stores.  I was fairly disappointed and had even considered buying some of the items new if I couldn’t find them soon.  That evening I had 30 minutes to kill before I was due at my next appointment so I decided to check out the Wasilla Value Village since I hadn’t been there yet.

I didn’t even grab a cart as I headed in because I figured I wouldn’t find much, but as soon as I stepped in the door I saw a whole stash of wicker hampers against the wall.  The exact item I’d just posted I was in search of on a local buy/sell page!  No one had responded to my request, because apparently they’d all already been donated! Some were smaller, some had liners, some had lids, some were in good shape – but not all of those characteristics lined up in the same piece.  I chose a larger one with a lid, but no liner for my guest bathroom.  I also found more decor items, a pantry jar, a flower pot for spring and a lovely purple storage box for my office.  Isn’t that little owl candle holder the cutest!?  He was just $4 – a far cry from the $60 Pottery Barn owl lanterns I’d been lusting after back in November!

Finds

Granted this wasn’t as big of a haul as the previous treasure trove, but after the little dry spell I was plenty happy with it.  I finally hit the Alaksa Picker store today and found a couple great bargains there as well.  I’ll share those soon once I get them cleaned up and in place around the house.  I’ve got a post in the works on how the cache pot came together set for later this weekend.  And watch for a post on where that wine rack ended up soon too!

Do you have a favorite thrifted find or a favorite thrift shop?  Tell me about it!

Entry Way Décor Storage

As a serial decorator, I’ve amassed quite a trove of basic décor items.  There are the usual suspects: platters, baskets, candle sticks, etc.  From the moment we signed on the dotted line, I’d planned to store all of these items in a cabinet of some sort in the entry way and this wonderful find fit the bill perfectly.  Now that we’re in the house, it was just a matter of organizing everything in this new ‘home’.  I finally unpacked and sorted all of my décor items last week, which left me with this mess.

DecorBefore

Although this inventory fluctuates with use, I wanted each type of item to have a specific spot in the dresser, so finding things would be easier.  I started with the larger items – vases, glass cloches, baskets and made sure they’d fit in the two cabinets.  One small drawer holds all my candles, the other has all my scentsy bars and hooks.

DecorAfterThere is a drawer for ‘fillers’, another for ‘containers’ and one for misc items that I use sporadically.  Not only was I able to fit everything that wasn’t in use somewhere in the house in this one piece, I still have one whole drawer empty!  That means there’s room to grow my collection!  Woo Hoo!  I feel a thrifting spree coming on! 🙂

That large mirror – another bargain find at just $30 on a local buy/sell page – sitting on top will soon hang over the dresser.  It might get a facelift after a while, but for now it will work just fine with the dresser’s rustic finish.

I’m excited to start decorating this new space for each holiday, creating a warm welcome for our guests. So now I want to know.  Do you decorate your entry way?  If so, do you go all out or keep it simple?

Waiting on Go

I really HATE waiting.  Sometimes I think it’s because of my creative personality which tends to flit from one idea to the next and is already onto another by the time someone else catches up, but deep down I think it’s because I perceive waiting as inefficiency – my #1 pet peeve.  Unfortunately I’ve had a lot of practice waiting on things, especially over the last few years as my husband and I sat in “limbo” waiting to see what would happen with his military career due to a knee injury.

So obviously, patience is definitely not my strong suit.  It’s an on-going lesson plan God and I will likely continue until I enter those pearly gates.  And what little patience I do have is wearing thin on the eve of our move to the new house.  There is still plenty to do and prep before the movers arrive tomorrow morning to begin packing.  We have a re-inspection and final walk through to complete tonight.  Packing of the ‘necessities’ for during the move must occur this evening and we’re still getting all the utilities and mail delivery arranged for the new house.  But with all this still to do I was sitting at work this afternoon with all my projects wrapped up, watching the moments tick by and wishing I had a fast forward button.

If I did, I’d zip right to the inspection tonight and hit play to listen in and confirm all systems are go, then fast forward through the walk-through so I wouldn’t hear the little details that will hopefully be handled before we arrive Friday morning to start unloading.  I’d certainly skip over the entire process of packing, sorting and unpacking until we’re working on the final boxes and things were neatly organized in their new home.

Although I’m excited for the move, I’m still nervous after all the delays and issues we’ve had with the builder.  I’m sure once we’re in and settled my ‘waiting for the other shoe to drop’ attitude will disappate, but it’s still not ‘real’ to me yet.  The entire project has been a dream for so long that it’s hard to beleive it’s really happening.  And it’s happening NOW.

I plan to document the move and the first few projects once we’re in – but it might take a while to get them posted as we still have to figure out internet access at the new house.  The options are fairly slim because we ARE in the boonies and the prices are steep to set up new service where there wasn’t a connection before, so it might take longer than we hope.  I’ll still be posting on Facebook thanks to my cell phone, but that might be it for a while.  So stay tuned and be sure you’ve liked my Facebook page to keep tabs on all the details in the mean time.

My Latest Splurge!

Although we’re still several weeks away from moving into the new house, I’ve been watching several sources for the perfect pieces to complete the look I want for several spaces, including the entry way.  I knew I wanted a table that I could decorate with seasonal items, but that also served as storage for my stock decorating materials (candles, cloches, baskets, etc.).

1100I spotted this beauty at a local antiques store last year while visiting Anchorage, but was aghast at the $1100 price tag!  I’d since watched it move around the store with a price drop each time I saw it.  The latest was a reduction to $850, which still seemed high to my bargainista conscience.  I told myself that if it was still there once we moved in I’d bite the bullet and make the purchase, taking a stab at negotiating a lower price first of course!

Then a few weeks ago I found a new local woman-owned business called Persnickety’s Attic who refinishes found pieces and advertises on Facebook.  I’d liked several of her pieces, but hadn’t seen anything that fit exactly what I wanted for the new house.  That is until she posted this beauty!

Dresser

Yup, my dream entry buffet’s long lost twin!  And at $575 she practically sang a siren’s song to me!  I confirmed the measurements were similar to the first “high-cost” piece and would fit the space, but was then out of town for our recent trip.  Luckily, another fan who was interested said it wouldn’t fit the space she wanted it for, so it was still available when I got back.  It was very hard to part with a big chunk of money so soon after our trip, but this is the real deal – a solid antique military dresser, which means it will last FOREVER!

DresserCabPlus it has LOTS of storage for all my decor items, including the tall vases and glass domes that don’t currently fit in the Craigslist dresser we found earlier this summer.  With a cabinet this deep on both sides I might even have to add a shelf on one side!  I’m already envisioning all my treasures stacked neatly where I can find them at any time!

Unfortunately, there is no room left in the rental for it to be enjoyed, so it will live in the garage next to the hot tub until we move.  I’m very tempted to move all my decor items into it just to see how everything fits.  Yes, it’s neurotic to do so, but I thrive on being organized and having all my decor stuff together where it will eventually live is music to my ears.  Yes – I know I’m crazy like that. 🙂

9It’s going to look fantastic in the new entry way which will look almost identical to this, except with our wood style floors throughout and prettier chandelier.

I’m thinking a hand-made driftwood mirror similar to this above it (although turned length-ways) would finish off the look and provide that ever important spot to make sure you don’t look like a hot mess before answering the doorbell.

What do you think?  Did I find a perfect look-a-like at a fraction of the cost?  Will drift wood compliment the finish or should I do something other than a mirror above?  I curious to hear your thoughts!

Thrift D’ Creations

Did you know I have an Etsy shop full of hand-made hair accessories, home décor and seasonal items? One of my favorite items to create are customized vinyls like this one I made for my sister with my Silhouette.

Plate

Although they can be used on just about any surface, I typically apply them to a platter for display. I’ve also created signage for my photography business Jenna D’ Photography in the same way, which I put on our vehicle windows.

CarAd

I hadn’t thought to market the ‘monogram’ design as a wedding gift, but I recently received an order for one for just that purpose and think it’s a wonderful idea! It’s certainly a unique gift that the couple will appreciate and only receive ONE of!

Plate2

I’ll be adding items for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas soon, so be sure to stop by and see if there’s something you’d like to add to your décor or accessory stash. And I’m always open to custom orders, so contact me if you have something in mind!

Flooring Update

Unfortunately, the Traffic Master Allure Ultra flooring I described in this post came in a little more over budget than we were willing to stretch so we decided to keep looking at options.  Good thing we did because we soon learned that Traffic Master isn’t the only company with a product toting these features.  Apparently Shaw Flooring has a ‘luxury vinyl plank’ that is essentially the same product with the same installation and guarantees, but at a price that comes in right AT our budgeted allowance!

Picture 1
Source

And even better is that the flooring vendor our builder likes to go through carries the product in-stock.  Granted he will have to place an order to provide enough material for our whole house, but he said that wouldn’t be a problem with enough advance notice and since we’re still at the framing stage I think we’ve got a little leeway still.

We chose the Northampton Cascade Acadia which has a variety of tones that will play well off our darker cabinets and leather furniture.  It’s a little different than the Allure Ultra we picked out, both in color and texture, but I like that it looks more like real wood than the Allure does and less texture means less hiding places for dirt and dust which trigger my allergies.

FloorOf course I had to prove to myself that I wouldn’t change my mind later, so we brought home a few sample planks (thanks to the very nice salesman at the flooring store!) and I laid them on the floor in our living room next to the rug and couch.  I also placed the Allure flooring next to it for comparison.  A week later, I’m sure I like the Shaw flooring better and I haven’t seen a single sign of the dogs constant scampering across it!  Although the pieces have migrated across the floor a few times thanks to furry fliers heading for the door when you say we’re going on a walk or for a ride! LOL

Here’s a closer shot to give a better feel of how it will look installed.  The light glare makes it look a little darker than it is in person.  The previous picture does a better job of showing the real colors, but I still think it will look great with the rest of our decor.  Don’t ya love when you find something you like better than the original item you found that was over budget?  I sure do! 🙂
