Crafty Christmas Creations

clips

I began making ribbon characters a few years ago after finding tutorials on Pinterest for several holidays. My Christmas collection includes a Christmas tree, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Clarice (Rudolph’s girlfriend), a snowman, a snowlady and a penguin. I’ve also tested angel and Santa designs similar to the snowman and lady, but haven’t perfected them yet.

At first I just made them as hair clips for my nieces, but I soon realized that if I sent clips to the girls I’d have to send something equally cute for my nephews so they didn’t feel left out. The solution was simple – put the same characters on broach pins. Not only did the boys enjoy them, adults who wanted to show off their festive side in a professional way couldn’t get enough of them!

This year I started making them as ornaments as well, since not everyone wants to wear a hair clip or broach pin. They haven’t been as popular as the clips and pins, but it’s nice to offer the option since I let customers mix and match for a price break from $3 each to two for $5.

Getting in Tune with the Holidays

December 1 marks the beginning of the Christmas season for me and there’s nothing that brings me into the holiday spirit quicker than Christmas music. That used to mean digging into my Christmas storage tubs for my holiday CDs, but thanks to the wonders of modern technology I now have a “Christmas” playlist in iTunes and all I have to do is click play wherever I am – my desktop computer at home, the iPod in the vehicle or the iHome at my office.

Like my other playlists, this one is pretty eclectic ranging from country to classic. Although the music included comes from multiple sources, two albums make up the majority of the list so I thought I’d share them with you. The first is “Heavenly Christmas” by Jackie Evancho. If you haven’t heard this gal’s AMAZING voice you’re missing out big time. Every time I hear her sing I get goose bumps. Literally. I’m so glad my mother-in-law was watching a special about her while I was visiting a few years ago because otherwise I probably still wouldn’t know about her amazing talent.

The other is LifeScapes Christmas Stress Relief, a 2-CD collection of 24 instrumental classic Christmas tunes. It’s the perfect background music when I’m working but still want a festive feel. I stumbled upon this album at Target several years ago while playing with the music sample kiosk.

I also have a few favorite singles on my list such including:

So now that you know what’s on my playlist, I want to hear what’s on yours! I’m always on the hunt for new favorites to add, so share your suggestions below.

Super Simple DIY Santa Ornaments

SantaOrn

These cute ornaments are another Pinterest success project. From the moment spotted the idea I knew it would be a great addition to my inventory at the upcoming holiday bazaars. The materials were simple – a red ball ornament, a soda can tab and black electrical tape. I had two of the three materials laying around and found an 8 pack of the red ornaments on sale at Michaels for around $5.

It took a little bit of finagling to get the tape to fit through the tab holes smoothly, but once I did a few it was pretty easy. I found it easiest to get the buckle/tab started with a bit of tape on either side and then pull the tape around the ornament, keeping it taunt so that it would go down flat. Once I made it around to the other side I just lined it up with the starter tape and cut it just past where they joined.

Priced at $5 each, they were definitely one of the most noticed pieces at my booth last weekend, but I only sold one. I still think that’s a fair price when you factor in my time and additional cost for the electrical tape, but I might reduce it to $4 each for my booth this weekend. If they don’t sell then they will end up on my own tree and two will go to my nephews who I give ornaments every year. It’s a tradition in my family for the kids to receive an ornament each year so they have a collection of their own when they move out one day. And Alaskan themed or hand-made ornaments are usually favorites! 😉

Farewell Baby Girl

Sorry for the lack of posts recently, but it’s been a rough week around the DB&DT house.  The day after Christmas the hubs was cutting down a tree that had started to fall toward the driveway.  The girls were playing nearby, as they always do when we’re working outside.  Once the tree was down he cut it into three large sections to throw back into the woods.  He called the girls up onto the driveway so they would be out of the way.  Little Sangria sat and watched the first two be tossed out of the way, but just couldn’t resist the temptation of the third section and ran after it.  When she did it hit her mid-back and when she fell, she could no longer move her back legs.

Hubs immediately scooped her up, loaded her into the truck and called me at work.  I found a vet who was open and could take her in as an emergency exam.  Once I’d given them the necessary information and made sure he had directions, I collected my things and left work to head to the vet’s office as well.  When I arrived about 30 minutes later, they had already administered a strong dose of pain meds and done xrays, but not found anything broken, which led them to believe that she had bruised her spinal cord.  They recommended she stay overnight so they could administer steroids to reduce any swelling and manage her pain with continued meds. They also noted that although she was only 3 years old, much of her spine had fused into a solid piece, which they believed was due to genetics because the fusion wasn’t localized to just one or two spots.

Although she was very dopey from the meds, they let us visit with her before leaving.  It was tough to see her like that, especially since it was the first time I’d seen her since that morning when I left for work.  The hubs was extremely upset by seeing her as well because he was convinced he was to blame for her condition.  He told her repeatedly that he was sorry for hurting her and I swear she gave him a look that said “I’m sorry for chasing the stick Daddy!”  We composed ourselves, made sure the overnight staff had our contact information and then came home with Tequila, who was very confused that Sangria wasn’t with us.  We called the vet for a status report before going to bed, but they had only administered one dose of steroids and said that likely wasn’t enough to create substantial improvement.  They told us that no news overnight was good news and confirmed we could come by in the morning to check in on her.  We let Tequila sleep in bed with us that night, both to comfort her and ourselves.

We both went to see her the next morning, but soon learned that there had been no change in her condition and that she was not able to empty her bladder, which was not a good sign for recovery.  They told us that the plan was to complete one more dose of steroids and then see where we were.  If there was no improvement, they could recommend us to a surgeon for further examination.  All we could do was wait, so I headed to work and the hubs went back home.

A few hours later I got a call from the vet, confirming that there was still no change and that they recommended we see the surgeon.  We agreed and asked them to see if the traveling surgeon was available to come examine her.  Unfortunately, he was unavailable that day, so they referred us to a veterinary specialist in Anchorage.  The hubs went and picked her up from the vet’s office and drove her into Anchorage, where I met him at the specialist’s office.

The staff helped us put her on a stretcher and bring her into an exam room.  Although the first vet had faxed over the xrays and treatment notes, the specialist conducted several independent physical tests and was not happy with what he was finding.  He also discovered that she had the equivalent of a torn ACL in one rear leg and a partial tear in the other, which would require knee surgery if we were able to get past the back injury.  He told us that the prognosis for restoring movement in her rear wasn’t good, but that they could do another round of xrays and a dye test to see if they could pinpoint the problem.  He estimated that would take about an hour so we left to let Tequila stretch her legs at the park and get some lunch.  While we sat eating lunch just around the corner, something inside me realized we would likely never take our baby girl back home and life would never be the way it had been.  A few minutes later, the hubs got a call from the vet and I knew immediately from his reaction that the news wasn’t good.  We rushed back to the vet’s office to see the xrays and talk options.

The new xrays had detected a broken vertebrate, that we had all missed in the first set of films.  The specialist told us that based on this new information, he didn’t think she’d ever walk again, even with surgery.  He also believed that the trauma to the spinal cord could lead to her losing function in the front legs as well.  He gave us a minute to decide what we wanted to do.  We talked it over, but it didn’t take us long to decide that we didn’t want our little girl to go through any further pain.  We called back the vet and informed him of our decision.  He expressed his approval, saying that if he thought he could fix her he would tell us that we were making the wrong choice and that if he was in our shoes he’d make the same call.  We asked to see her one last time to say our goodbyes, and the staff ushered us into the room where she was still sedated from the xrays and tests.

The next few minutes were a blur.  We signed a consent form for them to administer the final dose and selected the option to have her cremated.  I remember being handed a box of tissues and finding a chair where I managed to notified my office I wouldn’t be returning and posted the news on Facebook for those who had been following the situation from afar.

As I drove home, I realized that I hadn’t taken photos Christmas morning and was utterly devastated.  How had I, a photographer, not documented my little girl’s last Christmas?!  I remember thinking that it was a quiet Christmas, without much flair, so I wouldn’t capture images much different than those I already had in my library.  I’d thought I’d record everything next year because we’d be settled in the new house then and would have more to document.  Never again will I make that mistake.  Although I don’t have any photos of that morning, I will always recall how both the girls had been so excited pulling their toys out of the bags that Sangria had actually gotten one stuck on her head, which I had to quickly remove before she hit her sister or something harder!  Luckily, I had taken a few photos later that day with my phone, which I posted on Facebook.  This photo of her, her sister and the hubs Christmas day as we headed out for a ride in our side-by-side was the last photo I took of her.  It’s certainly not the best image I’ve ever created, but I will treasure it forever more.

Last

It’s a perfect depiction that although she was here a brief time, she was a happy soul who lived a life full of adventure and love.  That’s the down side of being a pet parent – you are most likely going to out-live your babies.  In the days since her passing, the calls and messages we have received have been a true comfort, both reaffirming that she was loved and that we made the best choice.  I am in complete awe of how many lives our “Little Bit” touched!  We never realized just how much of an inspiration our little family is to people – even those we only interact with for a short time.

And as much as it hurts to say goodbye, I know we were meant to have her in our lives.  She came to us a few months after our wedding and truly completed our family.  Here’s a quick look back at some of my favorite memories of her life with us.

And this is the face I’m sure the angels have seen every moment since she crossed over the rainbow.  May they never tire of playing fetch and giving belly rubs until we join her on the other side.

Until then I shall think of this:

Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they each miss someone very special, someone who was left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. Her bright eyes are intent; her eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, she breaks from the group, flying over the green grass, faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together…

Hang a Star on the Highest Bough

StarOldI’ve had the same tree topper for years.  I bought it on sale after Christmas one year and added a string of lights so that it lit up.  I loved it, but it was always so heavy and cumbersome, requiring a rod to support it and a special extension cord to be run to it for the lights.  After fussing with it for 15 minutes this year and still not liking how it was sitting, I decided it was time for a change.

I wasn’t sure what I wanted exactly, but figured it would be another star because that just seems right to me.  I know an angel is traditional, and I think that’s what I had as a child, but many I’ve seen are down-right creepy or psychedelic.  I like the symbolism of the star, which guided the wise men to Jesus’ manger and being an Alaskan, the North Star is always a favorite.  So star tree topper a-hunting I went.Picture 2

My first stop was Target, which had tinsel options, but nothing that seemed to fit my style.  I was considering researching DIY options when I decided to stop in at Pier One because I had a 20% off coupon.  They didn’t have any tree toppers but I did find this large glittered star ornament.  They called it a snowflake, but it sure looked like a star to me, especially in gold.  I wasn’t sure if it wold work as a tree topper so I carried it around with me as I browsed other areas of the store.

Something told me that even if I didn’t end up using it as a tree topper it would find a use in my holiday decor so I went ahead and bought it.  It was already a good price at $6.95, but I also got my coupon discount on top of that, so it was a super deal.

Once I got home I climbed on a chair and placed it at the top of the tree, arranging branches to make it sit just so.  After a few times off the chair to check and make sure it was straight, I was completely happy, so I cut off the hanging string and left it atop the tree.  It’s just the right scale to complete the shape of the tree and it coordinates with other decor in the house, so I think we have a new annual topper!  And for less than $6 it’s the best deal I’m likely to find, perhaps even after Christmas!

O’ Christmas Tree

Although I had the movers put the Christmas tree box in the family room because I intended to put it up right away, I didn’t actually get to that task until about a week after the move.  We’d just bought the tree last year, but we had to send it off to the tree infirmary after Christmas because as the Grinch says “there’s a light on one side that just won’t light” – although in our case it was a whole section. This was the first time I’d opened the box since it had been shipped back to us and had to chuckle when I spotted a tennis ball right on top!  Apparently the workers found it somewhere in the tree and put it back in the box to make sure we got it back!  Only us!

TreeBoxBall

I initially planned to put the tree in front of the windows next to the fireplace, but once we arranged the furniture there wasn’t room for it there.  So I tried it on the other side of the fireplace next to the TV, but it was too big for that spot.  Then I decided to try it at the corner of the family room where the dog bed had been placed.  I moved the dog bed – much to Sangria’s dismay – and started setting up the tree near the hallway, only to decide I didn’t like it there either.  It still felt crowded.

Tree1

At that point I stood in the middle of the main area and looked around trying to decide where to try next.  It was about this time that the hubs woke up from his night shift sleeping and saw me standing there pondering.  I explained my dilemma and he agreed that it didn’t fit right next to the TV or fireplace.  I told him I was considering placing it next to the back door where I’d just placed the curio cabinet – one of the few pieces I hadn’t ‘envisioned’ a spot for before the move – to see if I liked it there.

TreeCurio
Notice the fixed doggie door gap?! 🙂

The problem was I did like it there.  I knew my brain would see wherever the tree was placed for our first Christmas in this house as “the spot” it would go from here on out and I didn’t want to commit to moving the curio each year to put up the tree.

Hubs said he thought that was the best spot for the tree and then wandered off to wake up further.  I continued to stand puzzling, like the Grinch over Whoville.  Finally, I decided to try it just to appease my curiosity, which required moving the curio to three different spots before finding it’s temporary home in the guest room.  I started again with just the base section and liked how it looked, so I added the other two sections and started fluffing branches.  About that time the Hubs returned and noted that the tree looked good there.  I agreed and stated that he’d been right all along.

Unfortunately, I got distracted with some other project at that point and the tree remained undecorated for several days until I scheduled time to finish decorating this past weekend.  And here’s the final result!  I love the traditional feel of the white lights and this model has flocking and faux pine cones that make it feel real, especially when I get the sugared pine wax melts going!

TreeFinished

Our family has a tradition of letting each child choose a new Christmas ornament for themselves each year so that when they move out on their own they have an entire collection full of memories to decorate their own first tree.  I continue the tradition for myself, choosing a new ornament to add to the tree each year.  This year I found a wonderful vendor at a local craft bazaar who made ornaments from clay and I just couldn’t choose between two, so I got both.  One is a reindeer with a strand of lights tangled in his antlers while the other is a classic truck, much like my own 1955 F-100.

TreeOrnamentNew

TreeOrnamentNew2Although I love the look of themed trees seen in the magazines and stores, I still like having my eclectic grouping of ornaments at home because they remind me of the stories behind them.  Here are a few of my favorites.

TreeOrnament1
Still my #1 favorite, an Egyptian hand-blown glass ornament my mom got for me many years ago.

TreeOrnament2
I bought this little guy on my first trip to Kodiak. He’s lost an antler since then, but I still adore him.

TreeOrnament3
Found this at a craft bazaar in Kodiak and loved the simplicity of the design. I actually bought a few for my nephews too!

TreeOrnament4
Antler slice ornament with an otter I picked up at another craft bazaar.

TreeOrnament5
I loved the otter but also loved the reindeer on this one, which is why I bought both! I’m sensing a trend.. 🙂

TreeOrnament6
One of my top faves – The Grinch, which I ordered from another crafter.

TreeOrnament7
I bought this ornament for my husband to commemorate his time with the Coast Guard. He’s not super fond of it, but I am because it reminds me of his character and desire to help others in all he does.

TreeOrnament8
I don’t remember where this ornament came from – probably one I picked out and mom bought me, but I love the different designs on the deer.

TreeOrnament9
I picked this up on my layover in London on the way to Prague. Another great memento.

TreeOrnament10
The ornament my sister got us after our wedding.

TreeOrnament11
And the one my mom got us too!
