My Top Tips On Shopping Smart

I consider myself a savvy shopper.  By no means am I one of those crazed coupon extremists, but I do love me a good bargain. Some call it being cheap or frugal.  I consider it just plain common sense.  Why pay more for something when you don’t have to?  Sure there are times when I will pay more than I might want to for an item because I need it right away or because it’s what will work the best, but overall I generally refuse to pay for convenience when it’s unnecessary.  However, I’m logical about the choice.

Just today I purchased yogurt at the grocery store during my lunch hour for .20 more than it sells for at the commissary.  Why?  Because in order to go to the commissary I’d have to rearrange my schedule to fit their less user-friendly hours and drive out of my way when I don’t have any other reason to go to that area.  So in the end the extra time, gas and hassle aren’t worth the .20/yogurt I’d save.  Now if I’d save enough to almost get them for free, I might reconsider.

Without doubt, I learned my thrifty ways from my parents, who found every way to stretch a dollar both at home and in their business.  Unfortunately, not everyone has had that type of an example.  For some the only experience they have with saving money is watching some unrealistic ‘reality’ show or a period when money was tight and they were forced to comparison shop to meet their needs.  Neither of those tend to create a lasting desire to shop smart.   But imagine what might happen to our country’s economy if more people adopted a thrifty mind-set or better yet if our government did!  Now I know that’s a pipe dream, but at least it’s a good one.

So although I don’t think it will change the course of our nation’s economic turmoils, I’ve decided to share my top tips on bargain shopping for those who might just be dipping their toes into the money saving pool.

  1. Make a list.  I rarely go any store without a list, even when I’m running in for a few quick items.  Why?  Because having a list keeps me focused so I end up leaving with the items I came for and less additional items.  Preparing a list ahead of time also allows me to pull coupons I might have for the items I plan to purchase so I don’t forget to take or use them.
  2. Stop and think about each purchase before making it.  Ask yourself, do I really need this or is this an impulse?  If you really do need the item, is there a better priced option available without consequences (reduced quality, additional time or effort required, etc.)?  It sounds simple and it really is.  Sometimes just taking a moment to consider why you are purchasing something will make you realize how that purchase will affect your budget and other needs.
  3. Comparison shop.  In today’s marketplace there are multiple options for almost any item we would buy.  I’m not just talking about choosing a store brand over a name brand.  I compare coupon values and store sales.  Although I might have a coupon for one brand doesn’t mean that’s the one I should buy.  I often find that the price after a coupon is still higher than the sale price of a comparable item from a different brand.  Or a coupon might require that I purchase multiples of an item that I know will go to waste, costing me more in the long run.  So break out the calculator on your smart phone or carry a pocket version with you and figure out which is the best option.
  4. Learn to use rewards, because it’s like getting paid to shop.  If a store I shop at often offers a reward program I’m using it because honestly, this is where I save the most.  One of my favorites is fuel points for each dollar spent at a company’s retail store, earning up to $1/gallon discount when you purchase fuel from their gas stations.  I also earn rewards on my credit cards which can be redeemed for gift cards, often for $5-10 more in value than the amount I’m redeeming – which is perfect for gift giving or choosing cards at retailers where I shop often for additional value.  Some of my ‘store’ credit cards offer 0% interest on some purchases or earn me reward certificates for a certain dollar amount each time I spend a specified amount.  Of course the goal of their program is to get you back into the store to buy more, but if you use tip #2 you won’t fall into that trap.  I often make purchases on a particular account because it offers me a reward that paying with another method doesn’t.  That doesn’t mean you should sign up for every card you hear about.  Weigh the value of the rewards offered and decide if it’s a good fit for your shopping habits, budget and credit.
  5. If you really love something, buy it.  I’m talking about shopping smart.  Sure that often means saving money, but if you truly love an item and will enjoy it in your life for years to come it’s worth the investment and that makes it a smart purchase.  I used to pass over an item I really liked because of the price tag, only to purchase a less expensive item which either didn’t last as long or I didn’t like as much and ended up replacing soon thereafter often compiling the cost to be more than the initial item I wanted.  Instead, if I purchase something that makes me smile every time I see it I got a bargain.

Of course there are other tips out there like asking retailers to price match, purchasing certain items at certain times of the year (Google it for the specifics), avoiding known over-priced convenience items like these and buying annual items at the end of a season when stores are closing out inventories.  But these 5 are my basic methods for saving money without a lot of effort.  I hope they help you become a smart shopper or improve on your budding thrifty skills.

Simple, Rustic Monograms

6I recently created these monogram wall hangings as inventory for a local craft show using materials I had on hand.  A cork square, a little burlap, some cord, my Silhouette machine and a sharpie is all I needed.  First I covered the 6” cork square with burlap, wrapping it around the edges and securing it on the back with hot glue.

Next I designed a variety of popular initials and cut them out on either paper or wax paper.  This was the first time I’d used wax paper to make a stencil and found that it tended to curl once removed from the cutting mat, so the regular paper seemed to work a little better, although I had to be careful not to tear it.

3  4

5I pinned the stencil to the board and traced an outline of the letter with my sharpie.  From there I just colored inside the lines to fill in the remainder of the letter.

Then I attached a bit of fabric cord in a loop at the top of the board on the back with some more hot glue to make a simple hanger.  I think they turned out pretty darn cute and priced them at just $5 due to their simple construction.  I still have several available in my Etsy shop and still have materials to make more if you need a letter I haven’t created yet.

I also made these fabric bulletin boards using the same method, sans the stenciling portion.  It makes them just a little prettier than the basic cork tile on the wall.

I just love quick, easy craft projects, don’t you?!

The Easiest Project Yet

DSPumpsI spotted these pretty mason jar soap pumps on DecorSteals.com and immediately ordered two.  Unfortunately during the checkout process I was informed that they would not ship to Alaska.  UGH!  Guess that was fate telling me they really were as overpriced as I thought they were – $29 a pair, plus shipping!  I knew I’d pinned a DIY tutorial on how to make the same thing so I figured I’d keep my eyes peeled for pretty mason jars and pumps locally and give it a try.

About a week later my hubby took me to a deviously wonderful antique store he’d spotted while out and about.  Where I found these lovlies for just $10 each.

Jars

I was twitterpaited.  And then like I always do, I got distracted and they sat for weeks, until the day I needed a few items to fill the dishwasher before running a load.  Now all clean and pretty and sitting on my counter, they were back on my radar.  Luckily, a few days later I made a trip to Pier 1 to use the gift card my mom had gotten me for my birthday and found clear pumps for just a $1 each!  Of all the things I might find at Pier 1, that certainly wasn’t one I thought I would, but I’m sure glad I did!

Pump&Lid

I was in the midst of getting lots of crafts done for an upcoming display so I wasn’t planning on working on this little project until later, but my hubby decided to make it happen and started pulling out tools.  I quickly looked up the tutorial I’d saved to show him what the steps were and then followed him out to the garage to get action shots.

Drill

StagesFirst he marked the center of each lid with a dot.  Then he drilled a hole slightly smaller than the circumference – I love how that word makes me sound smart! – of the pump.  He then took a little more off the edges of the hole until the pump would fit into the opening. Here’s the line up of each stage from far to near.

Yes, that is our garbage can being used as a work bench.  I’m not the only one who longs for the day we move into our NEW home and start setting things up the way that works best for our needs – including a study work table with tool storage nearby!

At this point I returned to whatever craft I was currently working on and the hubs applied epoxy to each pump and lid to create a seal.  We let them dry a day or two to make sure everything cured completely.  Then he measured how long each stem should be and trimmed them down to fit.

I filled each with a healthy dose of soft soap from the bulk container I’d purchased some time ago for filling the small single hand pumps we’d had previously and then placed each in their new ‘home’. I love that each is different and has it’s own character.

All together we made four dispensers for $44.  That’s less than I was going to spend online without shipping, which makes me like them even better.  I think they turned out pretty darn cute and the hubs declared them “the easiest project yet!”  He then noted how he was surprised I hadn’t done more for things like lotion, etc.  I took that as a clue that he really does enjoy doing these little projects with me and told him I’d be sure to watch for more jars so we could make those daily use items ‘pretty’ enough to display in our new home and then promptly showed him one of my many DIY plans for the master bathroom… 🙂

The Endless Salad Bowl

CloseI decided to stop by one of my favorite Anchorage stores – Alaska Mill & Feed – on my birthday, just because.  Little did I know they had a gardening oasis in the back!  Hydrangea, lilacs, daisies, iris, salvia and even forsythia, which I didn’t know would grow here! It made me wish we were moving into our new home sooner than we likely will, so I could get my ‘stock’ going.  Unfortunately all of my containers are currently full and I’m about out of room for more around our rental.

I did however find this salad bowl.  I’d heard of the concept and actually planned to create one when we moved.  It contains a mix of lettuces for a perfect combination of greenery for salads.  Some were marked Alfresco Mix and other City Salad Mix.  I honestly have no idea what the difference was other than the city mix had more of the dark red lettuce, which I’m not a huge fan of.  When I saw they were marked $29.99 I decided to take one home because I couldn’t buy the bowl, soil and plants to create the same thing for less than that.  I went with the Alfresco Mix and chose the one with the least amount of red lettuce, just due to personal taste.

So now we have fresh lettuce for salads anytime we want!  A perfect combination with it’s neighbor, the cherry tomato plant.  And the best part is that the more we pick from it, the faster it should regrow!  Now the trick will be keeping it alive all winter indoors!  Good thing the dogs don’t seem to have a taste for salad.  LOL

New Bling for Our New Home

Think us crazy, but during the Memorial Day weekend the hubs and I purchased ALL of the appliances for our new home, even though we haven’t broken ground yet!  Before you start dialing the looney bin, let me explain why.

We’ve been researching appliances for a while and knew what we wanted and how much that was going to cost.  Definitely more than the builder’s measly appliance allowance even for just the range, microwave and dishwasher.  So when my now bargain-detecting trained husband discovered Best Buy was offering 10-30% off appliances for the holiday and would price match he started seriously crunching numbers cost comparing their prices against Home Depot’s, including the military discount.

So Saturday after leaving a movie he asked if I would mind making a ‘quick run to Best Buy’ since we were in the same shopping center.  Already knowing what his intentions were, I noted that I was sure this was likely to be just the opposite of a quick trip, but agreed.  Almost two hours later and two calls to the Best Buy credit center to work out the details, we are now owners of a complete LG suite of home appliances.

Thanks to the AWESOME holiday sale, their price match – including the military discount, and a friend who just happened to work at this store and worked some AH-MAZ-ING magic ;), we ended up saving around $2,000 and got 0% financing for 3 YEARS!  Plus they will hold the items indefinitely without a fee until we are ready for them, then deliver and install them for free.  And the warranties for each of the appliances, including the extended warranties we chose on the fridge and dishwasher (at 10% off) don’t start running until they are installed.  To top it off the range we wanted was discontinued, so they sold us the new version for the old model price!  That was a deal we just couldn’t pass up, knowing that we WILL be purchasing these items in the coming months one way or another.  All this while earning enough rewards points to make the fancy new TV the hubby wants when we move affordable!  Here’s what we got:

LG Ultra-Large Capacity French Door Fridge with Door-in-DoorFridgeLG 6.1 cu. ft Capacity Gas Double Oven RangeRangeLG 1.8 cu. ft. Over the Range MicrowaveMicrowaveLG Fully Integrated Dishwasher with Flexible EasyRack PlusDWLG 5.1 cu. ft. Mega Capacity TurboWash Washer with Steam TechnologyWasherLG 9.0 cu. ft. Mega Capacity Dryer with Steam TechnologyDryerYes we went fancy, but having lived with the annoying features of the appliances you are provided in military housing and our current rental (i.e. clothes eating washers, no space fridges and quirky stoves) we knew it was worth it to buy what we wanted from the get-go rather than settle for something less efficient only to end up replacing it sooner than necessary because we weren’t happy with the ‘bargain’ model.  And because we purchased higher end items with great reviews they should last us a LONG time!  I promise to do my own reviews once we’ve been using them for a while.

I wish we could start using them right away, but it will be nice to have them brand new in our home.  Now that puny builder’s allowance for appliances can be used for something more important like covering the potential extra cost of drilling a well beyond their well depth allowance of 100′!  We should be meeting with the builder this weekend to finalize our deal and once we do they have just 7 days to begin construction!  I can’t wait to watch our home come together, board by board and am already envisioning our first Christmas there.  Stay tuned for all the details and the thousands of pictures that will ensue!

Banana Republic for Under $5!

I decided to check out a thrift store I’d spotted around the corner from my office while at lunch today.  I’m glad I did, because I found this beauty just sitting on a rack waiting for me to find it!

I loved the bright color and the short sleeves because summer is finally making an appearance here in mainland Alaska, albeit slowly.  I about swooned when I saw the price tag of $4.50!  Seriously?  There were no rips, tears or snags anywhere that would justify that price, but I wasn’t about to look a gift horse in the mouth.

I continued browsing hoping to find another super sweet deal and spotted a cute little Uncle Sam figure for $3.  I won’t share him now since he is very likely to show up in my patriotic decor change over this weekend!  All together I walked out of the store for $7.50!  You just can’t beat that.  I would have paid that total for the jacket alone!

When I got home this evening I tested it out with a favorite layering piece.  Of course it’s just adorable!  Even with wrinkles!  I love that it’s versatile too.  I can see pairing it with jeans, black or grey slacks or even brown pants. I might have to try it out with a cute little dress I bought while in San Diego recently too!

So that’s my bargain score for the week.  I’m pretty happy about it and will be enjoying it’s little details for a while! Including this awesome texture on texture look!  🙂

Storage Hidden In Plain Sight

I. love. storage.  Seriously.  I always consider storage whenever purchasing something.  Either it provides storage or it has to be stored.  So when I was considering adding a bench to the foot of the bed in our guest room, something where guests could stop and remove their shoes by the front door and a chair in the corner of our master I knew I wanted them to add storage if they were going to take up room.

I found the storage bench for the guest room first.  I’d looked at similar styles online and at Target, but just couldn’t stomach the $100-200 price tags.  So during a late night run to Fred Meyer I decided to cruise through the home decor area just to browse.  And then I spotted it.  The bright orange sign that said “Today only! All ottomans 1/2 off!”  *Cue heavenly music**

Guest

I started scanning the shelves and found a pleather storage bench and a small rattan storage ottoman.  The bench seemed the perfect size for the foot of the queen bed in our guest room and was regularly $160.  $80 seemed a pretty fair price for such a big bench, so in my cart it went.  I pondered over the rattan ottoman for the entry way.  I considered getting two to make a longer bench but our rental has just a small stair landing inside the front door so I opted to get just one.  They were normally $60, making it just $30.  Then I remembered I had a coupon for home decor!  Another 10% off!

GuestStorageI happily made my way to the register as they announced the store would close in just 10 minutes.  It was obvious that the cashier was ready for her shift to be over and not excited by the rush of people now in her line due to the announcement.  As she rang me up we realized that the storage bench didn’t have a bar code on it, so she called back to that department to get a SKU number.

The department clerk had a hard time locating one because I’d grabbed the VERY last one of this style.  Several minutes later the cashier was read a bar code which she entered.  After the computer automatically applied the sale discount it rang up at $24.99!  She didn’t bat an eyelash, although the rattan ottoman had rung up for more and was smaller.  I waited a moment for her to say something, but she didn’t.  She was ready to move on to the next customer and bring an end to the day.  She told me my total, I paid and practically bolted out of the store before EntryBenchsomeone would tell me I needed to pay more.

Once I got it home and placed in the guest room I packed it with extra blankets that guests may want to use.  The prettier ones left over from this storage in the family room.  The rattan ottoman worked out perfectly for the entry way landing and provided the perfect spot to store the extra dog leashes, ‘pop’ baggies and collars our kiddos have amassed.

MasterI’d been stalking an ottoman at Target for the master for a while when I finally decided it was worth the price.  Normally $80 I got it for 5% off because I used my Target Red Card – if you shop at Target often and don’t have one you’re crazy!  Not the super deal I was hoping for, but I figured it made up for the super savings I’d gotten on the guest room bench.  And it was the perfect size to fit in the little corner between the back door and our closet.  It makes a perfect spot to sit and put on my socks/nylons and shoes each morning, which was exactly what I wanted.

MasterStorageI haven’t stored much in it yet, other than things that I don’t want the dogs getting into during the day when I’m at work.  For now the plan is to start storing clean trash bags there so I have a ready stock when I do the weekly yard clean up, eliminating the need to traipse through the house with dirty shoes upstairs to get one out from under the sink in the kitchen.

The best part about each of these ottomans is that they could work anywhere in our new home and probably will end up in areas different than they currently are.  Which is why versatility is the second thing I look for in each item I purchase!

Pottery Barn Knock Off Wall Medallions

PBMedallionsI can’t explain why, but I’m completely drawn to anything with an exotic print or pattern.  Perhaps it’s because of my plain Jenna, American apple pie background – you know, the whole you want what’s different and mysterious thing?  Whatever the reason, it’s part of why I L.O.V.E. Pier One and Pottery Barn‘s eclectic accessories.  So it was no surprise that I audibly gasped when I saw these in a Pottery Barn catalog a few seasons ago.  And then quickly went into sticker shock when I saw the set of three ran $130!  Um.. I don’t think so.  No even if I had a gift card.  I just have a mental block about over-priced items.

So I did what I always do.  I pinned them for inspiration and kept an eye out for something similar at a more reasonable price.  Then one day I found some wooden trivets at a yard sale in Kodiak.  They looked pretty old and dried out, but the carving pattern was pretty similar.  Plus the lady had three – small, medium and large!  I tried not to act too interested when I asked how much she wanted.  She glanced over and mumbled, “How about $5?”  I don’t think a $5 bill ever flew out of my pocket so fast!

MUnfortunately I wasn’t blogging back then and don’t have a before picture to share, but here’s a sneak peek at what they look like now.  Of course when my hubby saw them he raised an eyebrow and asked just what I intended to do with them.  I showed him my inspiration picture and explained I wanted him to paint them white for me.  I don’t do well with painting since I’m usually in a rush and try to do thick coats instead of thin ones and usually create a pretty wide berth of over spray so we decided long ago that when it comes to painting he saves himself a headache and just does it for me.  Yes, I’m spoiled, but he is too, so it’s an even trade! 🙂

It took a few coats because the wood was so porous and dry, but they turned out beautifully.  Unfortunately we were living in military housing at the time which meant ALL of our walls were WHITE.  Have I ever mentioned how much I HATE white walls?  If not, just accept that I do.  They make me feel like I’m in a cold hospital or crappy hotel room.  That left me stumped on what to do with these newly painted pretties.  So they sat in my project pile.  Waiting for something to happen.  And then it did.  We moved!

90% of the walls in our rental are painted and I decided to do a Modern Exotic theme in our bedroom since we opted to do a road trip honeymoon rather than jet off to some foreign locale.  The pattern fit right in with the other elements in the room and the white looks great against the colored wall.  I hung them above the TV on a small wall that needed a little something to make it look finished and I’m very happy with the final look.  Especially when my version comes in at just under $10!

Another Super-Sweet Craigslist Find!

1100I’ve been looking for a dresser or hutch to live in our guest room while in the rental and then become the entry way table when we move into our new home later this year.  I knew I wanted lots of storage, preferably with cabinets, but didn’t want to spend a lot if I still had to refinish it.

I had found this piece at a local antique store and fell in LOVE with it.  I seriously daydreamed about it.  But with a price tag of $1100 I just couldn’t commit.

1600I also found this one at a local furniture boutique and was smitten especially when I realized the bottom 5 drawers were false fronts making doors that opened to cabinets!  But at $1600 I walked away again.  So I continued watching Craigslist and the local refinisher’s Facebook profiles to see if I could find something similar at a more palatable price.

While browsing during a car wash – yes I multitask often! – I spotted a posting for a couple of dressers by someone moving out of state.  One looked like it would work, although it didn’t have the cabinets I was hoping for.  I showed the post to the hubs who liked it.  So I called the guy and arranged to come take a look that afternoon.

DresserScratchCash in hand we checked the piece over and noticed a sizable ding in the top front of the dresser.  The hubs thought he’d be able to repair it when we refinish the piece, so I made an offer $25 less than what they were asking.  And the seller accepted!  It came with a matching mirror, which I wasn’t interested in but figured we could clean up and resell to off-set some of the cost of the dresser.

So we loaded it up and headed home just a few blocks away.  Good thing it wasn’t far because this bad boy is MASSIVE and TALL.  It was interesting getting it inside and upstairs with just the two of us but we did it.  And then took a well deserved break.

I cleaned it up with some Old English and filled most of the drawers with my decor materials, leaving a few for guests to use.  Unfortunately some of my larger decor pieces like my glass cloche domes and candlestick stands are too big to fit in the drawers and still have to be stored in the closet, but it holds 90% of what I wanted it to, so I think it turned out alright.

So what do you think we paid for this piece?  Remember I’m a bargainista…..

Dresser

Would you believe we brought this baby home for just $100?!  It’s true!  And that included the mirror which I’ll clean up and sell in a few weeks making it even more of a deal!

We don’t plan to refinish it until we move since it will likely get dinged and scratched on the way to the new house, so that gives me time to ponder exactly what to do with it.  I’m sure we’ll paint it so that we can fix the ding in the top but need to decide on a color.  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWe do have paint left over from the little sewing table nightstand we did while in Kodiak.  Since the new house will have an extra bedroom to furnish there is a good possibility it could remain a guest room dresser.  If we use the same gray/green color as the nightstand and distress it a little to show some brown it would make a nice ‘set’.

I did find this DIY tutorial to make the same style as the $1600 dresser, so we may still end up with that in our new entry way, but I’d want it to have a molding on the bottom so I’m not constantly fishing Sangria’s tennis balls out from under it, which is a feature I was very happy to get on this bargain piece.  Although even if it didn’t, I’d still think I found a sweet deal! 🙂

The Perfect Little Side Table

I’ve been day dreaming about having a cute garden stool side table for some time now, but just wasn’t ready to fork out big bucks to have one.  So I’ve been watching the sales and pinning ideas.  I’d spotted one I really liked at Pier One, but it only Garden Stoolcame in dark blue, which just didn’t jive with the rest of my family room decor and at $125 I wasn’t interested in spending more to DIY it into the right color.  Then the other day I decided to browse through Overstock.com just for fun.  And I found this little gem.

It was originally priced at $130 but it was on sale for $106, plus free shipping.  It was still a more than I really wanted to spend, but it was a good price and the reviews made it sound perfect.  So I put it in my cart to ponder.  Do you do ever do that?  In the store I often put things in my shopping cart and wander around a bit to see if I still feel as drawn to them after I’ve seen other things.  If not, I don’t buy it.  I do the same thing online.  I put things in my cart and if I forget about them by the next day then I figure I must not really love it or need it enough.  But if I keep thinking about it then I’ll go back and click buy.  Often times if you do this on retail websites where you’ve purchased before and registered an email address they will send you a “did you forget this?” email with a discount offer if you complete the purchase!

I couldn’t get the colors of the stool out of my head for the next two days so I when I got an email from Overstock I went back to my cart to complete my purchase.  Although they didn’t offer me a coupon in the email, there was a coupon for purchases that day available on their website!  I call that FATE!  Unfortunately the free shipping offer disappeared when I entered my Alaskan zip code.  That drives me crazy.  They seriously act like we’re in a foreign country and some retailers won’t ship to AK at all!  I realize that Hawaii shares the same problem, but I figure their warm sandy beaches and paradise lifestyle make up for it! 🙂

Although it wasn’t free shipping it did only end up being $30, which seemed very reasonable to ship a ceramic fragile item to the frozen tundra.  And because I’d saved about the same amount with the coupon my total came to the sales price anyway.

I anxiously awaited my package’s arrival, tracking it like a mad woman online.  And then I came home and there was a box in front of my garage door!  I immediately carted it upstairs and unpacked it with glee.  Not only was it lighter than I’d expected, but it was exactly the color I wanted.  I nearly swooned.  I’m in love with the details and color variations in the glazing.

It is a little shorter than the arm of the chair it sits next to, but it is still within easy reach and has just enough room to hold a glass and my iPad.  Just what I need for my cozy evenings in my favorite chair.  I forsee this little stool enjoying a LONG life at our home, likely spending time in different areas of the house.  Great looks, good price and versatility?  What more could a girl want from a simple little stool?
